Yahoo Mail & Safari Mavericks Version

In the last couple of weeks Ad Block has started making Yahoo Mail slow and unresponsive.

It was working fine, but lately when you click on Yahoo Mail folders it just freezes. Then when you click on commands like "Delete", "Mark Unread" etc it freezes also. If I disable Ad Block it works great so I know it is an Ad Block issue.

Thanks,

David

I can confirm this effect, but I would say Y-mail does not necessarily 'freeze" but has developed inordinately long latencies, so that it can seem frozen and otherwise make Y-mail essentially unusable. I've measured delays as often being on the order of 10 to 30 seconds or even longer and they apply to almost any operation within Y-mail after the first 1 or 2 clicks, e.g., Folders, Move, Delete, Search, etc.

With AB Paused, however, one sees that some of these delays are comparable to the time it takes for Y-mail to render the ad images in various locations. It's as if AB is triggered only after the images begin to render, or complete rendering, before control is returned to the Y-mail root window. But by that time the context has been lost and the links/buttons become inactive or further delayed. Since everything was working fine until very recently (at least the delays were tolerable), I wonder if this is a result of some changes in the WebKit engine associated with Mavericks memory compression and putting things in background (a la mobile apps efficiency)?

I agree with dc and Rudy.

After setting Ad Block to exclude running on mail.yahoo.com, function was restored to my yahoo mail account when running on Safari with OS Mavericks.

I also noticed that when I ran yahoo mail in Firefox, it ran very quickly, with NO issues.

I also have seen this issue in the last week or so. Pausing seems to be a workaround when checking mail.

Same problem and experiences as dc, Rudy and K. Yahoo Mail in Safari is rendered useless all of a sudden, since my upgrading to Mavericks. I'm learning that somehow AdBlock is working worse than before.

I don't have the problem with Firefox -- AdBlock there has worked that out, apparently. So my solution is I can therefore use Firefox... or disable AdBlock's clumsy filtering on Yahoo.

I don't care to be pressured to turn off an extension so Safari can resume its functionality.

Same here in 10.8.5, which has a different Safari version than Mavericks. Is Yahoo Mail messing with/detecting AdBlock? Mail slow, seems unresponsive almost. Turning off AB fixes it. Seems to have started around when they changed their mail format recently.

Once in while it's okay, not often, but also just for a bit. If I keep going through my mail it gets slow in short order.

I've noticed it seems it maybe remembers what I click. If I Delete one and while waiting for a response if click Delete again the next one(s) Delete too.

Personally, I get around the problem by using Firefox to check my Yahoo Mail. It doesn't seem to have the same problem as Safari, even though it also uses ad-blocking software.

For what it's worth, I'm loathe to disable ad-blocking or tracking software, or privacy software, since that's its whole purpose -- to prevent only intrusive, power-sapping and potentially troublesome activity when I'm on the web. I'd rather complain to the website (in this case Yahoo) and force them to comply with intelligent customers... rather than forcing ads on us or forcing us to dumb-down our protective devices. There are enough sheep out there for the predators to gobble up; Yahoo and other companies can afford to lose the few of us that actually are discriminating consumers.

But to answer your question -- assuming you're also running the latest Safari and Mavericks (the latest Apple software), the same as I -- then go into Preferences of Safari (pull-down menu under "Safari" in ribbon atop pages), choose "EXTENSIONS"... you'll see Adblock listed. It's probably got ENABLE ADBLOCK checked. Underneath that is CLICK TO SHOW ME ADBLOCK OPTIONS -- choose that. A webpage opens and directs you to list what sites you'd rather allow sending you these ads, like Yahoo Mail.

    Hope this helps

An easier way to unblock websites is to click the AdBlock button, then
click "Don't run on this page" or "Don't run on pages on this domain". This
is easier than using the Customise tab on the Options page.

It seems to be fixed with the latest revision of Yahoo mail. I noticed that Yahoo did some changes to the mail interface recently and things are working fine with AdBlock now for me.

    Mountain Lion 10.8.5, Safari 6.1.2
