How is it possible for AdBlock to slow down my system so much?

I had this extension for a couple of months and wondered why my system was slow like a turtle. Although I don't have a quick machine, it is outrages for this extension to cause so much lag and annoyance!! At once point I was actually thinking of getting another laptop. If you make AdBlock less resources-intensive I might consider getting it back until then I won't mind one or two good ol' ads.
