AdBlock seems to "choke" Netzero after a few hundred ads are blocked

We really like AdBlock when we are using Safari on our Mac, but are wondering if it is AdBlock that "chokes" our Netzero email to a crawl when hundreds of ads are blocked. Everything is fine when we first start Safari and Netzero. Then after using Netzero for a while we can see that the number of ads had built up, sometimes up to 500 or more, and Netzero slows to a crawl, not even able to keep up with typing a few words into an email. It acts as though there is a "buffer" somewhere that gets too full. Signing off and restarting Netzero seems to mostly fix things until the number of ads builds up again. Thanks for an;y thoughts on this.

Usually a massive, unstopping increase in the number of ads blocked on a particular webpage is caused by bad coding on the part of the website. They are attempting to show more ads (which we then block) because they've detected that we're blocking them. There is, however, a problem here because this same problem would happen if the ad company's servers went down, causing their entire website to slow for everyone. I'm going to chat to our team about the bes way to proceed here is, then I (or another member of the team) will get back to you.

    Kieran,

Thank you.  I don't think this happens for us on any website other than Netzero.  And we have had some sort of similar problems in the past where it seemed that the number of ads overwhelmed us.   For a bit more info, we are using Netzero's DSL to our iMac.

    Hi Jinny,

Our apologies for the lateness of this reply! Our lead developer had a look at this issue following your report. That NetZero page is requesting mostly the same resources again and again. NetZero is loading a number of different ad networks and tracking sites, so he's not surprised that Safari is crashing (probably because of the retry attempts, not the the load).

There's really nothing AdBlock can do to fix this. Our best suggestions are to white-list the site or use Chrome or Firefox (just for stability reasons). You might also try contacting the NetZero webmaster to let them know about the problem.

On a slight different topic, you originally said that Safari chokes when hundreds of ads are blocked. AdBlock doesn't have an ads blocked counter in Safari. Out of curiosity, how can you tell how many ads have been blocked?

Rhana, Even later reply. Sorry. Looks like if I reload Netzero after the count gets into the hundreds it temporarily fixes things and Netzero behaves sort of normally until the count gets high again. I base this on the little white number in the little red oval that shows up next to the little ABP "stopsign" up at the top of the page when using Safari on our Mac. So not sure what that number is if there isn't a counter. Sure looks like a counter and when I click on that number it expands and says it is the number of ads blocked. Amazing how many it counts, even if they are just repeats. Makes for a much cleaner screen when using Netzero. Thank you! Jinny

    Hi Jinny,

Ah! That explains it. You're using Adblock Plus (ABP), not AdBlock. ABP is an entirely separate product developed by a different company. They have a counter in Safari, we don't. You can reach ABP at http://adblockplus.org. :)

Thanks for your reply and glad you found a workaround, sort of!
