Hi, I have a serious virus on my Macbook which has never happened to me in 15 years of mac ownership, and it is popping up ads that Adblock cannot seem to block. they show a lot of different URLS but the underlying one seems to be youradexchange dot com or some variation on internetsecurity dot info. I can sometimes not even get out of them without having to force quit my browser. Despite blocking them on my browser preferences they persist. Has anyone else dealt with these successfully?

    Hi David,

If you're seeing ads caused by malware on your computer, AdBlock can't block them. It can only block ads that were on webpages in the first place.

We recommend following the instructions on The Safe Mac's Adware Removal Guide, running an antivirus/antimalware scan, and removing any browser extensions you don't remember installing.

You can also find further instructions in our Knowledge Base.

    Hope this helps!

I ran this adware software, it cleaned out everything, and these popups -- which warn that the computer has been compromised and are almost impossible to close out of and have audio warning continuously -- still continue. thanks for trying but it did not solve this malware problem.

    Hi David,

Hm. Can you please type chrome://extensions in your address bar and attach a screenshot that shows the list of extensions installed?

    Hi David,

Thanks! Silverlight is a Microsoft technology for creating interactive websites, so that's not the culprit. It really looks like something keeps reinfecting your Mac, but it's not an extension, or at least not one that we can see.

What "adware software" did you use? We recommend Malwarebytes Free. We're not affiliated with them in any way. It just seems to do a really good job of removing adware and malware.

    Hi David,

Ah, rats, you have a Mac. Sorry, I forgot that. No, AdwareMedic is what you need.

Since you already tried that, it's time to call in the cavalry: Apple Tech Support. Can you please try their suggestions to remove adware and let us know if it makes a difference?

Whats interesting is when I unchecked Microsoft Silverlight and the VIdeo downloader from Google extensions -- and removed BitTorrent from my mac -- the problem vanished. I am afraid to add Silverlight back. D

    Hi David,

That's so strange! I checked, and those haven't been reported as malicious extensions. If you're curious (I kind of am now), you might try re-enabling each one, one at a time, to determine which one is causing the problem.
