Enable AdBlock on Chrome URLs

I'm using chrome and my homepage is set to the "new tab" page at chrome://newtab. There's something I'd like to block on the page but I cannot since adblock can't run on that type of URL.

I tried editing the permissions in the manifest.json (adding activeTab) and enabling the #extensions-on-chrome-urls flag in chrome but with no success since adblock still cannot run.

Is it possible to have it block elements on such URL's?

    Hi Capybara316,

I'd like to make sure these aren't malware first. Can you please attach a screenshot with the ad(s) you're seeing clearly marked? Please be sure to capture the entire browser window.

Hello. I should clarify what I'm wanting to block sorry. The element in
question is not an ad but thumbnail previews of websites you've visited.
This is shown by the chrome browser intentionally on the new tab page.
However I do not like it and thought I could just block the div with
adblock but can't due to it not running on chrome:// pages.

    Hi Capybara316,

AdBlock can't do what you're looking for. It's a Google/Chrome thing, not an AdBlock issue. However, I found a couple of workarounds in a Google forum post that may help:

    • Try setting your home page to chrome://apps in Chrome's settings.
    • Use an extension that replaces Chrome's default New Tab page. Just search for "new tab page" in the Chrome Web Store.

    Hope this helps!
