Mute sound

Hi There,

I would love it if there was a way to just mute ads. I regularly watch CTV NEWS on their site (http://www.ctvnews.ca/ctv-national-news) and cannot block ads otherwise the broadcast won't play to the end. So for now I just hit the mute button whenever ads start to play during regular commercial time. However since I like to watch the NEWS while cooking breakfast there are times I'm not able to hit mute, thus getting bombarded with terrible, and louder than the broadcast, ads.

So, if there was a way to detect an ad that was playing sound to just mute it, or the computer itself, then un-mute once the broadcast came back on that would be swell.

Cheers,
@Adamski

    Hi Adamski,

    Thanks for the suggestion! Unless you have whitelisted that site, you shouldn't get ads there at all. Is that the only site where you're seeing ads?

    When you say the broadcast won't play to the end with ad blocking on, do you mean that the site warns you to turn off AdBlock before it will show you content?

    Hi Rhana,

    There are no warnings on the site if ad blocking is enabled. What happens is the video does start playing normally, however since this is a NEWS broadcast they have regular commercial breaks so when those moments occur, as indicated by a little white dot in the timeline, the video goes black hoping to go to commercial but in my case just freezes.

    I cannot skip ahead or fast forward or anything, so I can catch the 1st segment of the NEWS but that's it. When adblocking is turned off all is fine because the commercials now play.

    Head over to http://www.ctvnews.ca/ctv-national-news to see what I'm referring too. If you need anymore info please let me know.

    Cheers,

    Hi Adamski,

    Ah, I see now, thanks. The trouble here is Safari. The way Safari handles things like videos and other page resources limits what things we can block. When I watch that broadcast in Chrome, the ads are blocked and the entire video plays normally. In fact, our recommended workaround is just to watch videos in Chrome, even if you keep Safari as your browser for everything else.

    I'll pass your suggestion to our developers for consideration nevertheless. It's an interesting idea. :)

    Thanks for getting back to me. Yeah I tried this in Safari and Firefox to no avail. Surprised that it would work in Google owned Chrome. Will give it a shot. Thanks.
