AdBlock & iFrames

I have exactly the same problem as was mentioned in another thread, but the thread was closed so I wasn't able to add to it.

When AdBlock filters out irritating ads, it does this very well, thus getting rid of the in your face flashing & slideshows, etc. However, it still leaves the containing iFrames there. This still causes any text on the page to be pushed across as if the image was still there.

I would include an example link, but they tend to appear & disappear at random. For example, I frequent a forum site (www.forumgarden.com) which is constantly have the posts themselves squeezed down to just a few characters wide - or even a single character. As you can imagine, this makes posts practically impossible to read.

I know it's not practical to totally disable iframes, as they are used for plenty of other things as well, but surely there has to be a way of either disabling the iframe containing the offending Ads altogether, or to reduce their size settings to, say, 1px x 1px.

    Hi Jerry,

Could you please provide a screenshot of this issue, as well as a link to the original discussion?

    Hi,

I have included the bottom part of the previous posting in the screenshot, so it can be seen what I mean. This is typical of the random appearance of the iframes / ads. Go there another time & it’ll display in full. If I disable AdBlock the empty space will be filled with an even more annoying ad.

Sorry — I meant a link to the other closed thread you mentioned in your first message.

I've searched so many sites trying to find a solution to this that I can't be sure.
I think it 'may' have been this one, which although not 'quite' the same, it looks very similar, inasmuch as the iframes remain, although the content is removed.

    http://support.getadblock.com/discussions/suggestions/447-iframes-v...

It's like if you want to wallpaper your room, but there's a painting hanging in the way. You remove the painting, but the frame's still getting in the way (even if you can't see it).

    Hi!

Can you post a screenshot with the ad clearly marked. If you can, can you edit it in Paint to make it obvious what the problem is. I'll attach your first screenshot here, as for some reason we couldn't see where the ad was on it.

This is a more up to date example, chowing the problem a little more clearly, without any need for editing.

The 2 screenshots are of the same posting - one with Adblock Enabled, the other with Adblock Disabled. The result is self evident.

As I said previously, the size of these iFrames also tends to vary, even within the same site, presumably to accommodate the size of the ad. This is an example of one of the more extreme ones. My previous posting was one of the effect made by one of the lesser ones.

    1. Go to AdBlock button -> Options -> SUPPORT -> "Have our team requested some debug info? and paste it into this discussion.
    2. Go to the FILTER LISTS tab. Does clicking "update now" fix the problem?
    3. Uncheck all filter lists on the same page and reload the page with the problem. Does the problem disappear?
      • If unchecking all filter lists fixes the problem, which one filter list must you check to cause the problem again after another reload? (make sure to wait for it to fetch the filter first)

There isn't a Support in my Options, just:
    1. Show tabs on Flash & Java
    2. Hide placeholders of blocked elements (which I though might have done it).
    3. Count filter hits.

Also, there is no Update Now button, although there is an Update Filters option in Actions, which I have run, to no avail.

It seems that you are not using AdBlock, but instead using ABP. We are not
them, ABP is made by another company.

You can contact them at http://adblockplus.org

That's right - I thought they were the same thing - such similar names & logos.

Anyway, I've tried downloading AdBlock & Disable ABP, but the same thing is happening. Curiously even one pages where it says that 0 as have been blocked on the page, yet when I Disable AdBlock there are at least 2 that show up.

As requested, this is the Report info...

    Hi Jerry,

We couldn't reproduce the issue on our side. Since you're seeing the same behavior with both AdBlock and Adblock Plus, it sounds like an issue with something else on your computer.

Try disabling other extensions (and remove any that you don't remember installing), and run an antivirus/antimalware scan on your computer!

    Hi Rhana,

Yes it is still a problem – primarily in a forum I frequent, forumgarden.com. Adblock gets rid of the adverts, but the frames that contain them generally remain. This is especially a nuisance when the ads appear to the right of postings, causing them to squeeze the actual posts to a limited width of characters. This is even more apparent as I tend to have my display set to larger fonts, as I sit quite a distance back from my screen.

    Regards,

    Jerry

    Hi Jerry,

I see the same behavior, particularly on outlook.com. The ads themselves are blocked or hidden, but the space they would ordinarily take up remains. For these you might try using AdBlock's custom blocking wizard, which will help you isolate and eliminate those frames.

    1. Right-click the item you want to hide and select AdBlock > Block this ad.
    2. Slide the slider until the entire item is blocked.
    3. Click Looks good, then click Block it!

Please let us know if this doesn't help!

    Hi Rhana,

A typical page, with a couple of screenshots attached...

As I normally have the font zoomed a bit larger than this, the effect is usually more dramatic.

    Hi Jerry,

We really appreciate your patience, since this has been happening for close to a year. Obviously, this is one of the stranger issues we've run into. Let's try a bit more troubleshooting, okay?

    1. Click the AdBlock button and select Options, then click SUPPORT. Next to "Have our team requested some debug info?" click here and paste the text from the box into this discussion.
    2. You said this primarily happens on forumgarden.com. Does it happen at all anywhere else?
    3. Please try using Chrome. Does it still happen?

    Hi Jerry,

I understand you prefer to use Firefox. But it will help to know whether this happens in any other browser than Firefox, or if it's exclusive to Firefox.
