Why did you change AdBlock name to BetaFish Adblocker
I really don't understand why did you do that.
AdBlock has been successful for years and now you change its
name to a long and hard to remember name? Even Google can't show me
any good result of "BetaFish Adblocker"
When I first seeing this name I thought I install a wrong extension
and it's beta version of some new and untested ad blocking
software.
I hope you guys switch bach to the AdBlock name

I'll wait until the test is over.

Yeah this was thew biggest ever marketing mistake. BetaFish.... :( It was an insane move that will lead to the death of this Adblock by time. The original name was worth 1 billiion USD, but this one makes the firm worth 1 USD and no one takes this name/app seriously.

I just uninstalled and replied on why that it was a malware. Little did I know you had changed the name. It quite common today that some programs sneaky or in the background installs toolbars and now also "adblocks". Adblocks that serve their on ads in order to spy on users and earn money.
PC users have had to learn during 20+ years that EVERYTHING that is unnormal is dangerours. It can be ads, tray icons, system processes, behavior, CPU or memeory usage is a potential virus infection. Now when browser add ons seems to be the most common place to ad malware a name change is very bad.

Thanks to this "test" I discovered 'uBlock Origin' and will stay with it:

Now go and tell Mercedes to change the name to ShtBull Merchandes for a little test ;)
Even quality products can die from a bad name ...

Just got a feeling that some of the posters here are NOT even users of this addon
They are just here to promote other addons

I don't hide myself as 'anon' like you.
See this search and look how many times I posted at different places I use AdBlock over the years:
https://www.google.com/#q=BilBg+AdBlock
And these are the Extensions now:

I hate the new name of AdBlock. So I searched yesterday and now use 'uBlock Origin'.
Since I found/think it is better programmed and have better technically written wiki I will stay with it even if AdBlock returns it's name.
This is the net result for me from the little 'test' they make.

See
But this applies to you

so is this still an experiment or wtf is going on?
70 Posted by Badda-Fish on 01 May, 2015 02:52 AM
I don't know whether the software itself has changed but it doesn't matter. Perhaps in geek circles this is all a big laugh. Non-geeks don't see it that way. The trust is gone and so am I.

Hi all,
The name change is part of an experiment and only temporary. BetaFish has always been the name of Michael's company. AdBlock is still blocking all ads by default, unlike other ad-blockers, and will continue doing so!

Just set up my new desktop today and went to install AdBlock for Chrome. Had difficulty figuring out what's going on. I personally will be discontinuing using this software as a result of this change.
It's not about the name. I don't really care what the software is called.
For me, it's about trust. Recently there has been an epidemic of cases where popular extensions are purchased by companies who add advertisements or change the extensions to make money. Often times they slowly roll out changes over updates rather than making them immediately. They typically collect and sell user data. Is BetaFish Adblocker doing this? Probably not, no, but because it's not simple for us to verify whether this is occurring, we have to trust you. Which is why suddenly making a change, being cagey about the explanation of why, saying it's temporary but not giving a timeline, and generally confusing everyone is not helpful to earn user trust.
There's nothing magic about an ad blocker. There are many options in this space. The most valuable thing about an ad blocker is the filter set, and the same filters can be used by other competitors. I always appreciated that AdBlock for Chrome did not sell out the way AdBlock Plus did, but if I can't trust the company providing a service I use, I can't use the service. Sorry.

For the last couple weeks I've been noticing that the Betafish took the place of my original adblocker. I ignored it, I knew a name change happened - but then something else started happening. My systems started slowing down - I use this plugin on Mac's and PC's - and it seemed that just running the browser was killing my performance machine-wide.
So I pulled out of the Betafish and viola! I got my Mac back - surprised this little plugin could take so many cycles off an i7.. My work PC's also perform much better with that other adblocker.
Sorry man - this one had the top roost for a long time, but I won't be running it again. Not when it appears the application doesn't know how to perform it's job efficiently - that or your blocking code is vulnerable..

Old name might be back, but the damage is done. I have no actual data on how this "experiment" affected your userbase, but rest assured this caused a ripple effect that will echo far into the future. Thx to this little episode I found out about uBlock, and alltough my testing of said product is still at it's infancy, I have allready found it the more economical and sound choise of the 2. As a tech support person I will be affecting this change to many computers, and I trust I am not the only one.

can you guys confirm that Chrome is browing slower with the adblock installed ?
it seems that it is a bit slower than before .....have to make more tests

NOT ANY SLOWER FOR ME
81 Posted by repleat on 07 May, 2015 07:32 AM
Clocked the name reversion. Changed back to ADBLOCK., this morning.
Strange but true:- Whilst using another adblocker, it blocked 36 ads on my favourite site. ADBLOCK only blocks 24.
All in the name of progress !

The source code is freely available in case you have any doubts as to whether anything underhand is going on. I don't understand the reason for the temporary name change any more than anyone else, but I haven't lost any trust in the extension.
